Main Overview

Awareness that leads to inclusion.

Disability awareness and inclusion is still a relatively unknown and untapped area of business. It is not uncommon for organisations to have the right attitude but struggle to understand how to implement strategies to ensure disabled people feel included.

This General Disability Awareness Session is designed to be an overview of disability awareness.  This makes it a great place to start when thinking about disability training and developing a culture that includes disabled people.

Many of the barriers that are in the way of disabled people achieving are contained in biases of others.  Biases can prevent delegates from speaking to disabled people.  Often stemming from a desire not to offend.  We will take a look at language and how it informs our perceptions and biases of others.

We can then look at how this relates to disabled people.  Using our new knowledge, we will look at some common phrases and terms that are associated with describing disabled people and disability and explore whether we feel these are appropriate or what can be used instead.

The social model of disability hypothesises that it is not an impairment that disables a person but the environment in which they live.  Exploring this theory in more detail will help delegates to understand how subtle and not so subtle barriers are erected and prevent disabled people from feeling included in every-day life.  Once these barriers are understood, we will explore ways of mitigating such barriers within organisations in order for disabled people to actively participate and feel engaged and welcome.

All Celebrating Disability training sessions are interactive in style.  Designed to never be “death by PowerPoint”, delegates will be encouraged to engage and participate in conversation.  Esi encourages delegates to ask questions throughout and adopts a “no question is a silly question” approach.

In order to embed learning, tailored fictional case study scenario based exercises will be used to ensure ideas presented are tangible and realistic.
