The Social Model of Disability says that people are disabled not by their condition, but by the barriers created by society. This could be physical access, attitudes, communication, or processes that don’t account for everyone. By identifying and removing these barriers, we can create more inclusive spaces where everyone can participate fully.
This philosophy empowers strategies for disability inclusion because it reminds everybody that there is always more that can be done to be inclusive of disabled people; therefore, people are not powerless to make changes. It also empowers disabled people, as it reminds us that there may be reasons why we cannot achieve things in the way that we want to.
