“Esi grasped our needs and delivered a session that both informed and educated our employees through powerful personal stories, allowing our teams to demonstrate true allyship.”
Celebrating Disability recently delivered a talk to LoopMe, a technology company that uses artificial intelligence to improve brand advertising performance and outcomes. We delivered an engaging virtual talk for 35 LoopMe employees from various countries, including the UK, Japan, Ukraine, Poland, and the USA. The session, led by our founder Esi, was a resounding success. Many participants praised Esi for her enthusiasm and the powerful insights from her personal experiences. This case study highlights how we help companies like LoopMe foster more inclusive workplaces globally.
Background
LoopMe recognises the importance of fostering an inclusive workplace culture and sought Celebrating Disability’s expertise to help drive them closer to their goals. Their previous efforts in inclusivity led them to focusing specifically on disability awareness. Nick Sheppard, People Ops Coordinator at LoopMe, emphasised the significance of this work, stating, “Inclusivity in the workplace is absolutely paramount.” By partnering with us, LoopMe aimed to ensure that their commitment to equal treatment and fairness was effectively reflected in their workplace practices. Our collaboration was focused on providing the necessary support and education to help LoopMe create an engaged and inclusive work environment.
Nick elaborated on the importance of inclusivity, stating that it is a “key part of our culture at LoopMe. People deserve to be treated equally and fairly, therefore it’s a non-negotiable that our workplace is a reflection of this need.” He emphasised that fostering an inclusive environment helps drive innovation and collaboration, as diverse perspectives contribute to better decision-making. For LoopMe, inclusivity is integral to their business, enhancing their ability to innovate and collaborate while ensuring every employee feels valued and supported.
Our Proposal
When LoopMe sought to further foster inclusivity in their workplace, they found Celebrating Disability online through our established reputation. LoopMe decided to reach out to us after seeing how highly we ranked for our services and our positive reviews.
What truly set Celebrating Disability apart for LoopMe was the opportunity to hear directly from Esi, our founder. Esi’s lived experiences and passionate advocacy for disability inclusivity resonated deeply with LoopMe’s values. Her authentic perspective and commitment to fostering inclusive workplaces were pivotal in LoopMe’s decision to proceed with our services.
With this strong foundation, Celebrating Disability crafted a tailored proposal to address LoopMe’s specific needs, aiming to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all employees. The proposal was for a 60-minute talk focusing on diversity and intersectionality of disability and articulating how support can be implemented and asked for.
Talk Details
In April, the interactive talk went ahead, successfully bringing together around 35 LoopMe staff members from various roles and countries, including the UK, USA, Ukraine, Japan, and Poland. The talk was 60 minutes long and focused on the intersectionality of disability and how to articulate inclusion, amongst other topics.
Hosted on Mentimeter, an interactive presentation platform, the talk encouraged anonymous contributions through polls and questions, fostering open and honest discussions. This format made it easier for attendees to share their thoughts and insights. Esi’s compelling slides covered practical strategies for creating a more inclusive work environment and the importance of proactive adjustments to accommodate all employees.
The session was well-received, with participants appreciating the interactive elements and the valuable insights provided. Esi’s use of real-life examples and the engaging format created a dynamic atmosphere, highlighting the importance of inclusivity and the positive impact it can have on a workplace
Experience
Before the talk, LoopMe had high expectations, hoping to see a meaningful impact on their employees’ understanding of inclusivity. They were particularly interested in seeing how Celebrating Disability’s unique approach would resonate with their global team.
The atmosphere of the talk was dynamic and engaging, driven by Esi’s natural enthusiasm and expertise. Using personal stories and real-life examples, Esi created a compelling narrative that not only informed but also inspired the participants. The interactive elements of the talk, facilitated through Mentimeter, ensured that everyone could actively participate in real time.
The reaction from participants was overwhelmingly positive. Multiple attendees reached out to express how much they enjoyed the talk and praised Esi for her engaging delivery and insightful content. The session resonated deeply with LoopMe employees, leaving a lasting impression on many.
Notable feedback from participants highlighted the effectiveness of Esi’s personal stories in conveying the importance of inclusivity and anticipatory adjustments. The session was praised for its ability to both inform and educate, aligning perfectly with LoopMe’s commitment to inclusivity as a core principle guiding their business processes and decisions. Nick said of this, “Esi grasped our needs and delivered a session that both informed and educated our employees through powerful personal stories, allowing our teams to demonstrate true allyship.”
Key Learnings and Outcomes
The talk delivered by Celebrating Disability provided LoopMe and its team with several key insights into enhancing workplace inclusivity. Participants gained a deeper understanding of the importance of proactive support for disabled employees, particularly through anticipatory adjustments.
Post-talk, LoopMe implemented a heightened awareness of inclusivity practices within their managerial roles. The session underscored the role of managers in supporting employees effectively, reinforcing existing practices at LoopMe aimed at fostering an inclusive workplace culture.
One unexpected outcome of the talk was the introduction of Lexxic, a platform designed for neurodivergent employees. Nick expressed appreciation for its availability, ensuring it would be accessible for any future needs within the organisation. This is a core aspect of implementing anticipatory adjustments.
Nick reflected on his experience with Celebrating Disability, noting,
“Esi’s lived experience allowed our attendees to truly access her content and understand the need to promote inclusive practices across the organisation. The session highlighted the need for managers to take an active role in supporting employees, reinforcing practices we already have in place at LoopMe. Esi used the ‘Spoon Theory’ to help illustrate the effort required by those with hidden disabilities to undertake simple day-to-day tasks; it was a really impactful exercise.”
Conclusion
Nick shared his thoughts on the talk, stating, “Esi created an impactful session which has provided so much benefit to our business, teams, and global employees. Through her lived experience, she was able to illustrate how integral inclusivity is to all workplaces.”
For organisations considering similar inclusivity training, LoopMe recommends leveraging Celebrating Disability’s expertise. Nick concludes, “If inclusivity is high on your agenda, I’d thoroughly recommend Esi’s expertise in helping to educate your teams further.”
Celebrating Disability’s session not only educated but inspired LoopMe’s global workforce, fostering a culture where inclusivity is embraced and celebrated. As companies strive to create more equitable workplaces, investing in inclusive training is a critical step towards building a supportive environment where all employees can thrive.
Amy Thinks
I got a real sense of passion and pride from Nick that both he and LoopMe had for inclusion. After the usual case study questions, we ended up chatting about the social model of disability and Spoon Theory, and how it changed our perceptions of how instead of being pitied for being disabled, the shift should focus on how we can all do better for the people around us.
Whether it be through anticipatory adjustments, like having a support system in place in case a neurodivergent employee needs it, or just being empathetic to another person’s situation, disability inclusion has a long way to go, but seeing companies like LoopMe leading the way and fostering change is incredibly inspiring to see. We need more companies like LoopMe to pave the way not just to tick a box or hit a quota, but to genuinely care about all of its employees thriving, and doing whatever they can to make that happen.
